About Us

Our Mission

The mission of the Order of the Arrow is to fulfill its purpose as an integral part of the Boy Scouts of America through positive youth leadership under the guidance of selected capable adults.

Our Purpose

Recognize those who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and through that recognition cause others to conduct themselves in a way that warrants similar recognition.

Promote camping, responsible outdoor adventure, and environmental stewardship as essential components of every Scout’s experience, in the unit, year-round, and in summer camp.

Develop leaders with the willingness, character, spirit, and ability to advance the activities of their units, our Brotherhood, Scouting, and ultimately our nation.

Crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

Vision Statement

As Scouting’s National Honor Society — an integral part of every council — our service, activities, adventures, and training for Arrowmen will be models of quality leadership development and programming that enrich the lives of our members and help extend Scouting to America’s youth.

Our History

The Order of the Arrow was founded during the summer of 1915 at Treasure Island, the Philadelphia Council Scout camp by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson.  In 1922, the Order of the Arrow became an official program experiment of the Boy Scout of America. In 1948, the Order of the Arrow was officially integrated into the Scouting movement. In 1998, the Order became recognized as Scouting’s National Honor Society. Lodge 559 has been part of Westark Area Council since 1963. We serve our youth and camps, and continuously fulfill The Order of the Arrow’s Purpose.
